Bonnie and Clyde

Clyde Barrow was born into desperate poverty on the 24th of March, 1909 in the town of Tellico, Texas. In an attempt to better his family’s dire financial position, his father uprooted Clyde and his six siblings moved to Dallas in the early 20s.

Times were still tough though. While his parents and younger siblings slept in a dusty old wagon on the side of the road, Clyde was forced to sleep under it as there was no room inside for him.

When his father returned from work one day with a tent that a co-worker had given to him as a gift, it was seen by Clyde as a rare luxury indeed.

On warm evenings, the young Clyde would lie on his back and look up at the stars while his family slept in the wagon behind him. Clyde decided that he wanted only two things in his life, the love of a good woman, and money. He proved to be willing to do whatever it took to get both of those things.

He began to rob convenience stores, usually on his own but sometimes with his brother Buck. Clyde preferred to do a job alone if he could, as it meant keeping all of the loot for himself.

Having been caught behind the wheel of a stolen vehicle for the third time in as many months, Clyde was sent to prison for twelve months at the age of 21. He would later remark that he relished the opportunity to go inside, as he hoped to find other people like himself. People who were willing to rob and steal in order to make a better life for themselves.

As he strolled into his new cell at Eastham Prison Farm, Clyde was met by his cellmate. The young Clyde offered his hand for his fellow prisoner to shake. His cellmate flashed him a sinister smile and kissed him on the cheek instead. That night Clyde was sexually assaulted by his cellmate. The prison guard who was on duty on Clyde’s landing, stood outside the cell and laughed while the attack took place.

By the age of 21 Clyde had experienced more hardship than most people will in their entire lives. The world had dealt him a
